Maryland MEP’s Biotech Boot Camp Proves Successful with Eleven Graduates

In January 2023, Maryland MEP kicked off the third Biotech Boot Camp in partnership with Frederick County Government Workforce Services, Frederick County Economic Development, Frederick Community College and Maryland Department of Labor’s EARN Maryland Program. The Biotech Boot Camp is a 4-week training program designed to help jobseekers gain the fundamental skills necessary to enter Frederick’s growing biotech industry. The program is intended for both first-time and experienced workers looking for a new career pathway.

The Biotech Boot Camp is a true partnership between the public and private sectors with several of the local biotech companies designing the training curriculum, participating in the training and conducting interviews. The Boot Camp has proven to be a success, with an average starting wage of $25.00 for graduates of the program.

January’s Biotech Boot Camp started with 10 employer partners including AstraZeneca, Lonza Walkersville, VaLogic, Thermo Fisher Scientific, Kite, BioNTech, Medigen, MiliporeSigma, Meso Scale Discovery, and Texcell North America. In February, the training was completed with 11 graduates. The graduates each had four to five interviews with participating companies and they are now in the application and hiring process.  All participants are expected to receive job offers.

The next Biotech Boot Camp is scheduled for May 30, 2023, to June 23, 2023, at Frederick Community College. To learn more about the program, Maryland MEP is hosting a virtual Biotech Boot Camp Information Session on March 22 at 10:00 AM.
