Celebrating Manufacturing Day and Maryland’s Manufacturing Legacy

Every October, manufacturers across the country open their doors to students, educators, and communities to celebrate Manufacturing Day (MFG Day)—an initiative that began in 2012 with the mission of showcasing modern manufacturing careers and changing perceptions of the industry. What started as a grassroots effort has grown into a nationwide movement, coordinated by The Manufacturing Institute and embraced by manufacturers, schools, and economic leaders alike.

The goal of Manufacturing Day is simple: highlight the importance of manufacturing to our economy and inspire the next generation of creators, builders, and problem solvers. Events often include facility tours, hands-on activities, and career exploration opportunities that bring to life the innovation, technology, and opportunities within the industry.

Here in Maryland, Manufacturing Day takes on special significance. Manufacturing has long been a cornerstone of our state’s economy—employing more than 100,000 Marylanders and contributing over $25 billion annually to the state’s GDP. From aerospace and defense to food and beverage, life sciences, electronics, and traditional fabrication, Maryland’s manufacturers drive innovation, create high-quality jobs, and strengthen local communities.

Manufacturing is more than just production—it’s about resilience, creativity, and problem-solving. Maryland manufacturers continue to innovate, embrace advanced technologies, and adapt to a rapidly changing global economy.

As we celebrate Manufacturing Day, it’s important to recognize the role Maryland manufacturers play in:

  • Workforce Development: Offering meaningful career paths with competitive wages and opportunities for growth.
  • Innovation: Leading the way in automation, biotechnology, and sustainable manufacturing practices.
  • Community Impact: Supporting local economies, investing in neighborhoods, and creating the products we rely on every day.

At Maryland MEP, we are proud to support this industry through workforce programs, training, and initiatives designed to help manufacturers compete, grow, and thrive. Manufacturing Day is more than just one event—it’s a reminder of the vital role this sector plays in shaping Maryland’s future. This October, we encourage manufacturers, students, educators, and community members across the state to take part in Manufacturing Day activities and to register your events on mfgday.com for added visibility, connection with a national audience, and to showcase Maryland’s role in this nationwide movement. Together, we can celebrate the incredible contributions of manufacturing and inspire the next generation to explore the opportunities it provides.

This year, Maryland MEP is proud to kick off Manufacturing Day with the 2025 Maryland Manufacturing Technology Summit on October 2nd. This event will bring manufacturers, technology experts, and workforce leaders together to showcase innovation, explore new solutions, and celebrate the strength of Maryland’s manufacturing community.
